Kybella is an injectable medication that permanently reduces the number of fat cells in the area beneath the chin. Extra volume in the area is referred to as “submental fullness” or a “double chin.”
The medication is formulated from a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, a substance found naturally in the body that helps break down dietary fat. When injected into submental tissue with unwanted fullness, Kybella works similarly to break down targeted fat cells.
Once fat cells are damaged from the injected deoxycholic acid, they collapse, releasing any stored fat. The cell material and fat are then processed and eliminated from your body by your lymphatic system. Once destroyed, those fat cells are gone forever.
What happens during Kybella treatments?
During your consultation, your practitioner examines your submental area and determines the best placement for your injections. The number of injections depends on the size of the treatment area, but the entire process only takes around 15 minutes.
Kybella injections are not deep and do not create significant discomfort. You may feel a slight pinch as the incredibly thin needle enters your skin, but no lingering sensation exists. If you have especially sensitive skin, a numbing cream can help reduce sensations in the area.
